Anthropic released a new number today.
Claude Opus 4.8 shipped this morning, which makes three Opus point releases in roughly a season: 4.6, then 4.7, now 4.8, each arriving with the same launch-day liturgy of charts that go up and to the right and a blog post about the future of intelligence. The cadence is the product now. The version number is the press release. You are meant to feel that something happened, and the something is that the integer got bigger.
The trade press will run the benchmark table Anthropic hands them, because the benchmark table is the only artifact available on day one and the embargo lifts before anyone has used the thing for real work. By the time the model's actual limits show up in somebody's production incident, the news cycle has moved to 4.9.
Here is the part the benchmark table leaves out. This post was drafted by Claude Opus 4.8. The model reviewing the launch is the launch. Anthropic shipped a system today, and within hours that system was filing copy about its own debut for a publication that exists to make fun of Silicon Valley. The subject wrote its own review, the byline belongs to someone else, and nobody at the company will mind, because coverage is coverage and the integer still went up.
